Gaming with Glide

Gaming is one of the most intensive uses for an internet connection there are, and any slight connectivity issue can mean significant disruption to the gaming experience. In this article we'll run through how gaming works on our network, and some of the more common issues and solutions you might face.

Gaming on our network

If you're using any games console, before you do anything you'll need to associate it to your account. This allows us to know that when we see that device connecting to the network, it's yours and not something we should be worried about. All you need is your console's unique hardware identifier, which you'll find instructions on how to locate in the main article for this.

When playing online games with your game console or PC, we always recommend using Ethernet wherever possible. This provides a direct connection and negates the interference and instability that inevitably comes with Wi-Fi. In a case when you’re restricted to using Wi-Fi, we recommend trying to locate your nearest access point and positioning your games console or PC closer, in order to provide your device with the best possible signal.

Whether you’re playing with a games console or PC, you will be unable to host games from within the Glide network. You should however be able to connect to any party or hosted game outside of the network without any problems. This is due to how your connection reaches the internet from within our network, which involves it being routed through multiple IPv4 domains, and is a fundamental component of our network's structure.

Unfortunately we are unable to to accept any Port-forwarding requests. All ports required for accessing game servers are open by default.

Potential issues

Speed/latency issues

If you’re seeing high latency within your game, you can try the following things:

  1. If you’re using Wi-Fi, see if this problem is the same using Ethernet.
  2. Check the server your online game is using and make sure this is set to the closest server - in most cases this is Europe.
  3. Note the time of day when high latency occurs. If it appears outside of peak hours, screenshot any information that identifies high latency, run a speed test at speedtest.net and record the results (Ping/Download Speed/Upload Speed).

Disconnections

If you see regular disconnections on a game to its servers but don’t see the same on any other games, then it’s likely a problem with your device reaching the game's server, which you'll need to contact the game/server support about. If you see regular disconnections on all of your games and you’re using Wi-Fi, connect via Ethernet (if possible) to try and replicate the disconnections.

It will be easier for the Glide representatives to troubleshoot and investigate your connection issue if we have as much information as possible. If you’re seeing regular disconnections on a game, try all options of multiplayer to see if there are specific modes when you disconnect. Whilst you’re playing the online game, see if there is any consistency for regular connection drops and when you do lose connection, try to describe exactly what happens when you disconnect, as well as what you normally do to fix the problem. Finally, it will be useful to know if you see disconnections at the same time as your other devices, such as your phone or laptop.
