How to find diagnostic device details

As part of troubleshooting your connection, the Service Desk may ask for your device’s MAC address and network details. Providing the information from the affected device helps us identify it on the Glide network and investigate what is happening around your connection.

A MAC address identifies a network connection on your device. It normally contains 12 letters and numbers and may be shown as a Wi-Fi address, Physical address or Hardware address. A device can have different MAC addresses for Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

An IP address is assigned to your device when it connects to a network. An IPv4 address is made up of four groups of numbers, such as 10.20.30.40. We may also ask for the router or default gateway and DNS servers.

Before you begin

  • Connect the device to the affected Glide Wi-Fi network, or connect its Ethernet cable, before checking the details.
  • If the device can use both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, make sure you record the details for the connection that is having the problem.
  • Some devices use a private or randomised MAC address for each Wi-Fi network. If one is shown for the connected Glide network, provide that address because it is the address Glide will see.
  • Record the IPv4 address unless the Service Desk specifically asks for IPv6 details.
  • Take a clear photo or screenshot of the information where possible. Do not change any network settings unless the Service Desk asks you to.

Select a device category below, then select your device to view the instructions.

Find your device details

Computers and laptops

Choose your computer below.

Windows 11 and Windows 10
  1. Make sure the computer is connected using the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection you want to check.
  2. Select Start, type Command Prompt, then open it.
  3. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
  4. Find the section for the connection you are using. Look for Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi for Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter for a wired connection.
  5. Record the Physical Address, IPv4 Address, Default Gateway and DNS Servers.

Important: Ignore adapters marked as disconnected and virtual adapters created by VPN or virtual-machine software.

Apple Mac

For Wi-Fi:

  1. Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select Details next to the connected Glide network.
  3. Record the Wi-Fi address, IP address and Router.
  4. Select DNS in the same window to view the DNS server addresses.

For Ethernet:

  1. Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Network.
  2. Select Ethernet, then select Details.
  3. Select TCP/IP to view the IPv4 and router addresses, DNS to view the DNS servers, and Hardware to view the Ethernet MAC address.
Chromebook
  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Select the connected Wi-Fi network.
  3. Select the Information icon at the top of the panel.
  4. Record the IP address. The MAC address is labelled Wi-Fi.
Ubuntu
  1. Open Activities and search for Wi-Fi for a wireless connection or Network for a wired connection.
  2. Open the relevant settings panel.
  3. Select the Settings button next to the active connection.
  4. In Details, record the Hardware Address and IPv4 address.
  5. If the Service Desk also needs the gateway or DNS servers, select the IPv4 tab and record the displayed information without changing it.
Phones, tablets and watches

Choose your device below.

iPhone and iPad
  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select the information icon next to the connected Glide network.

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet.
  2. Select the Settings icon next to the connected Glide network.
  3. Scroll down and record the IP address and Randomised MAC address.

  2. Select the Settings icon next to the connected Glide network.
  3. Select View more.
  4. Record the displayed MAC address or MAC address type and the IP address.

The console does not reliably display all automatically assigned IP, gateway and DNS details on one screen, so provide the MAC address first and the Service Desk will advise if anything else is needed.

The Alexa app does not reliably display the Echo device’s IP address on every model or app version. If the IP address is not shown, provide the MAC address and exact Echo model to the Service Desk so the device can be identified on the network.

If the device is not currently connected, select Change or remove a Wi-Fi network in Device Settings and follow the Alexa app instructions to reconnect it.

Sonos
  1. Open the Sonos app on an iPhone, iPad or Android device.
  2. Open Settings > General Settings > About Your System.
  3. Find the affected Sonos product and record its IP Address.

If your device is not listed

Open the device’s network, Wi-Fi, status, system information or About menu and look for a MAC address, Wi-Fi address, Physical address or Hardware address. If you cannot find it, check the manufacturer’s support guide for your exact model.

When contacting the Service Desk, include the device manufacturer and model, the Glide network name you are trying to use, whether you are using Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any MAC or IP details you can find.

Please do not send your Wi-Fi password, Glide password or any other account password.
